Etymotic recommends changing the filters if the loudness decreases or sound quality deteriorates. HF stands for High Fidelity and Etymotic ensures the headphones live up to their name by testing them with the same technology as used in the production of hearing aids to create an accurate response to the high frequency boost added by the studios in high quality recordings. As well, they use two methods in order to measure noise isolation, the Real-Ear-attenuated-at-Threshold (REAT) and the Probe Microphone Methods which are explained in detail on the manufacturer website. The hf5 is aimed at anyone looking for a smaller pair of earphones with high end noise isolation and sound reproduction.
