Philips SHE9850/97
$100.00
Released January, 2008
The Pros:Boxed unit packaging is sleek and easy to open - excellent alternative to hard plastic/vaccum-sealed units that require box-cutters to open. Multiple ear-tip options ensure optimal user fit - silicone and memory foam sleeves provide versatility for listeners who prefer a hard or soft fit. Integrated cord clip significantly reduces likelihood of cable tangling - component is easy to use and is small enough to stay out of the way when not in use.
The Cons:Not recommended for environments requiring peripheral noise awareness - unit blocks out virtually all local sound when properly inserted. Reinforced cable design is prone to "wire noise" - may cause frustration amongst users who are on-the-go or exercising, with the cord frequently moving around.
The Philips SHE9850/97 is designed with sound quality in mind. The receiver has a motor made up of a coil, a metal u-shaped armature, a pair of magnets, a drive rod, and a diaphragm. This enables electomagnetic currents to alter the armature's polarity which in turn moves the drive rod and the diaphragm to generate the sound.

The Philips team claims that their fine-tuning of the over all device produces a greater output at lower frequencies, meaning the consumer can get crisper sound quality without having to damage their ears with a louder volume. The earbuds are angled with a 15-degree tilt which follows the average anatomy of the human ear, giving a better fit and comfort. It is important to take this claim with a grain of salt, as the shape of ears vary between people and even vary within the span of a person's life.
